SOFI/BSN number in the Netherlands – everything you need to know

The SOFI number, now known as the BSN (Burgerservicenummer), is a unique identification number assigned to every resident of the Netherlands, both Dutch citizens and employees from other countries.

It has a similar function to identification numbers in other countries (e.g. PESEL in Poland, NIN in the UK or NIE in Spain). The BSN is necessary for identification in the tax, social and administrative systems of the Netherlands.

In this article, you will learn about the process of obtaining a BSN, what documents are required and why it is so important for anyone who wants to work legally in the Netherlands.

Having a BSN is essential if you want to:

  • Work legally– Your employer requires a BSN to register your work and pay your contributions.
  • Open a bank account– Dutch banks require a BSN to open an account.
  • Use healthcare– Health insurance and medical care in the Netherlands are linked to your BSN.
  • Pay your taxes– You need a BSN to pay your taxes to the tax office (Belastingdienst).
How do I get a BSN?

To get a BSN, you must register with your local municipality (gemeente) when you arrive in the Netherlands. The process varies depending on how long you plan to stay in the country.

    • Long-term registration (over 4 months): If you plan to stay in the Netherlands for a longer period of time, you must register as a full resident. To do this, you go to the local authority where you will be asked to show a valid passport or ID card, as well as a lease agreement or other document proving your address. Once registered, you will receive a BSN.

  • Short-term registration (under 4 months): If you plan to stay in the Netherlands for less than 4 months, for example to work seasonally, you will also need a BSN. In this case, you do not need to register your permanent address, but you will still need a BSN to work legally.

In both cases, the BSN will be issued at the local authority after you have completed your registration. This process usually takes a short time and you will receive the number on site or shortly after your visit. Importantly, the number is assigned for life and its creation is free of charge.

What to do if you lose your BSN?

The BSN is assigned to you for life, so even if you lose the documents on which it was recorded, it can be recovered. In such a case, you should contact the municipal office (gemeente), which will issue a new copy of the document containing your BSN. Remember that you can also find this number on some official documents, such as tax returns or letters from the tax office.

BSN and personal data protection

The BSN is protected in accordance with the regulations on personal data protection and should not be made available to unauthorized persons. Employers, banks or offices have the right to request this number, but in other cases always be careful. Unauthorised use of the BSN can lead to identity theft, which is why it is so important to protect your personal data.

Summary

Obtaining a BSN number is a key step in the process of starting work in the Netherlands. Without this number, you will not be able to work legally, open a bank account or use healthcare. Therefore, if you are planning to go to the Netherlands for work purposes, make sure to register with the municipal office as soon as possible after arrival.
